Image Alt Text Checker

Paste a URL to see every image on the page with its alt text and a clear status: missing, empty, too long or OK. Then export the list and fix the gaps.

We list every <img> in the page's HTML and grade its alt text.

Checking the rest of the page too? Try our meta tag checker.

What this alt text checker looks at

We load the page you enter and read every <img> tag in its HTML. For each image you get a thumbnail, the alt text exactly as written and one of four statuses. Missing means there is no alt attribute. Empty means alt="". Too long means more than 125 characters. OK means the image has a description of sensible length. Images marked with role="presentation" or aria-hidden are labelled decorative, so you can see which empty values are intentional.

Why alt text matters

Alt text does two jobs. For people using screen readers, it is the image. Without it they hear a file name like "IMG_4821.jpg", or nothing at all, and lose whatever the image was there to show. Missing alt text is also one of the most common failures in accessibility audits, which matters if your business needs to meet ADA or WCAG expectations.

For search, alt text helps search engines understand what an image shows. That affects whether your product photos, diagrams and team pictures appear in image search, and it adds context to the page around them. It is a small signal on its own, but on an ecommerce or service site with hundreds of images, it adds up.

How to fix the issues it finds

  • Missing: add an alt attribute to every image. In WordPress or Shopify you can set it in the media library. In code, add alt to the tag.
  • Empty on a meaningful image: describe what the image shows and why it's there, for example "Technician replacing an AC compressor on a rooftop unit".
  • Empty on a decorative image: leave it empty. Dividers, background shapes and icons next to text labels should be skipped by screen readers.
  • Too long: trim it to the one detail that matters and move extra explanation into a caption or the body text.
  • Keyword stuffing: if your alt text reads like a list of search terms, rewrite it as a plain description. That serves people and search engines better.

Use the CSV export to hand the list to whoever manages your content, or to track progress page by page. If your site has hundreds of images, our on-page SEO team can work through them for you.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between missing and empty alt text?

Missing means the img tag has no alt attribute at all, so screen readers often read out the file name instead. Empty means alt="", which tells assistive technology to skip the image. Empty is correct for purely decorative images and wrong for images that carry meaning.

How long should alt text be?

Aim for a short sentence, usually under 125 characters. Some screen readers cut longer text off, and a long string is harder to listen to. If an image needs a long explanation, such as a chart, put that detail in the surrounding text or a caption.

Does alt text help SEO?

Yes. Alt text is one of the main signals search engines use to understand an image, which affects how it ranks in image search. It also adds relevant context to the page. Write it for people first, and include a keyword only when it describes the image naturally.

Why are some images on my page not listed?

The checker reads the HTML your server sends. Images set as CSS backgrounds, or added later by JavaScript, are not in that HTML. Background images don't take alt text anyway. For script-loaded images, make sure your code adds an alt attribute.

Is this alt text checker free?

Yes. It's free with no account. There's a fair-use limit of 20 checks every 10 minutes per visitor to keep the tool fast for everyone.
